INFO ON CPS GRADING UPDATE -
Now that we are certain we are not going to return to school this semester, CPS has changed the way in which final report card grades will be determined. The basic intent of the original policy remains the same, but there is a provision to address students that do not participate meaningfully in remote learning during 4th quarter.

Now that we are certain we are not going to return to school this semester, CPS has changed the way in which final report card grades will be determined. The basic intent of the original policy remains the same, but there is a provision to address students that do not participate meaningfully in remote learning during 4th quarter.
- If you fail 4th quarter, your GPA will not be impacted, but you will receive an "INC" (for incomplete) on your report card and need to retake 2nd semester chemistry in order to graduate.
- If you pass 4th quarter, but with a grade lower than that you received in 3rd quarter, it will not impact your GPA and you will receive a "P" (for passing) on your report card.
- If you pass 4th quarter with a grade equal to or higher than your 3rd quarter grade, you will see a regular letter grade on your report card and it will count in your GPA.
The three most important things to know are...
- 4th quarter graded assignments include one weekly major assignment and one weekly socrative quiz given in the regularly scheduled orange/blue class period on Thursdays and Fridays. Other valuable assignments will continue to be posted for those students who desire and are able to complete a more robust chemistry curriculum, but there are only two things I am going to put into Aspen for each week. I will be very flexible with assignment deadlines throughout this whole semester. At the beginning of June though, I will need to set a deadline to cut off the submission of late work though so that I can get things graded before grades are due. Making up quizzes is more challenging, so please do everything you can to take them on time. Email me ASAP if you miss a quiz so we can schedule a time to get it made up and avoid a zero. The first one that will count is last week's Chapter 13 Gas Quiz B.
- Our weekly schedule needs to change a bit to adapt to the CPS grading update. Starting today & moving forward...
- Mon = New weekly assignments and resources posted on class website, students work on them independently.
- Tues & Wed = Students work independently & all students may join optional live tutoring from 1:00-1:30, link will be emailed out at 12:55. This will be incredibly valuable time for us to get prepared for the quiz on Thurs/Fri. Be on time, turn your cameras on and your microphones off, be appropriate, and use the virtual parking lot (link). Don't forget about the Chapter 10/14 - Greatest Hits of Student Questions (link) either :)
- Thurs & Fri = Online socrative quiz of the week will be given during your regularly scheduled Orange/Blue class period. It is open note but to be completed individually. You will need to log into your period's socrative room using your student ID. Questions on all future socrative quizzes will be randomized for everyone & you will only be able to take the quiz once during regularly scheduled class time-if you quit or do not finish, all unanswered questions will be marked wrong and you will not be able to retake the quiz. I will make certain that they are not too long. Anyone who has prepared will be able to finish them within the 60 minute class period. Please try very hard to take the quiz on time, if you miss it you need to email me ASAP to reschedule in order to avoid a zero.
- I realize it is going to be harder for some students to adjust than others. I am truly mostly concerned with your physical and emotional health, so whenever you are unable to complete something - just email me. If you let me know what's going on, I can help you, for real. I am going to be very understanding about deadlines, IF you reach out and communicate with me. However, if you don't do your work and do not communicate, we will have a problem. I sincerely want to avoid giving a single student an INC this semester, so PLEASE stay in touch! I love you, miss you and wish like crazy that we could just be back in school, but this is the best we can manage right now & we'll get through it together..
Calendar of Due Dates - Plan ahead & remember to email me with any questions about anything :) Focus on the major assignment each week & the Friday Socrative quiz.
Chapter 14 "I CANs"...
...compare/contrast and classify IMFs of various compounds.
...relate a substance's relative strength of IMFs to its vapor pressure and boiling point.
... name and locate all possible phase changes between solids, liquids and gases on a phase diagram.

This Week's Goals -
The IMFs & Phase Changes Pre-test is this week's major assignment. Along with the socrative quiz at the end of the week, it is the only one being officially graded, but all of these would normally be done & are helpful in learning about energy.
- MAJOR ASSIGNMENT - IMF & Phase Change Pre-test due Wed 5/20. Post a link to your completed work (with correct permissions granted so I can view it please!) in the Quarter 4 Assignment Tracker. NOTE - previewing the pre-test in google drive works fine, but this pdf file has images that will get screwed up when opened in google docs. I recommend opening in Word or any pdf viewer.
- Review Ch 14 - IMFs & Phase Changes Slides Presentation (link)
- Read 14.1,14.2,14.4 & 14.5 - notes are optional, but please start asking even more questions in Chapter 10/14 - Greatest Hits of Student Questions (link)!
- Review teacher tutoring videos & prepare for socrative Chapter 14 Energy Quiz at the end of this week during regularly scheduled class periods. ORANGE = Thurs & BLUE = Fri
- HW #'s 1-8,13,15,17,19,25,28,30,31(post to Quarter 4 Assignment Tracker by Thurs 5/14… I know these are boring but they are the VERY BEST way to prepare for our next socrative quiz! Use the virtual parking lot to ask for help too!)
- EXTRA CREDIT - Amazing science images & stories (Part II) - Please upload a fascinating, beautiful, surprising and/or really cool science image or story w/a link and short description of what it's all about. Moving forward, all extra credit will be turned in on our google classroom (code to join = eykv7lo)
Socrative Quiz Info...new ones to be taken during scheduled Orange/Blue class time on Thursdays and Fridays.
Socrative quiz grades up through Ch 13 Gas Quiz A entered into Aspen do NOT count in your grade.
Socrative Ch 41 will be at the end of this week during regularly scheduled class periods. ORANGE = Thurs & BLUE = Fri
For all socrative exams after but not including Chapter 13 Gas Quiz A, you will need to log into your period's socrative room using your student ID. Questions on all future socrative quizzes will be randomized for everyone & you will only be able to take the quiz once during regularly scheduled class time-if you quit, all unanswered questions will be marked wrong and you will not be able to retake the quiz. If you still want to take the Ch 13 Gas Quiz A, log into socrative and join room "CH13ATRINE". All future make-up quizzes will need to be scheduled via email with Mrs. Trine though, so please do everything possible to take them on time during regularly schedule Orange/Blue class period. IF YOU MISSED THE CH 10 QUIZ, THE RETAKE IS ON MONDAY 5/18 at 1:00 pm.
Log into socrative.com and join the room for your class period. I've separated the class periods out into five rooms: TRINE1, TRINE2, TRINE4, TRINE5 & TRINE 7. If you did not take the chapter 7/8 exam &/or the chapter 9 exam &/or the chapter 13 Gas Quiz A, please consider doing so. You can always take them. They are waiting in their own socrative rooms called "CH78TRINE" & "CH9TRINE" & "CH13ATRINE". IF YOU MISSED CH 10 QUIZ, THE RETAKE IS ON MONDAY 5/18 at 1:00 pm.
- try your hardest
- use your study materials like you will when you take an optional final exam (keep them organized!)
- learn from it
- realize it's not as good or thorough as our normal tests
- EMAIL MRS. TRINE ASAP IF YOU CAN'T TAKE THE SOCRATIVE QUIZZES ON TIME!
