Week 35 - 5/25 to 5/29
Special Goodbye Message from Ms. Fritz for 1st & 2nd Period :) (link)
INFO ON CPS GRADING UPDATE -
Now that we are certain we are not going to return to school this semester, CPS has changed the way in which final report card grades will be determined. The basic intent of the original policy remains the same, but there is a provision to address students that do not participate meaningfully in remote learning during 4th quarter.
Now that we are certain we are not going to return to school this semester, CPS has changed the way in which final report card grades will be determined. The basic intent of the original policy remains the same, but there is a provision to address students that do not participate meaningfully in remote learning during 4th quarter.
- If you fail 4th quarter, your GPA will not be impacted, but you will receive an "INC" (for incomplete) on your report card and need to retake 2nd semester chemistry in order to graduate.
- If you pass 4th quarter, but with a grade lower than that you received in 3rd quarter, it will not impact your GPA and you will receive a "P" (for passing) on your report card.
- If you pass 4th quarter with a grade equal to or higher than your 3rd quarter grade, you will see a regular letter grade on your report card and it will count in your GPA.
- I realize it is going to be harder for some students to adjust than others. I am truly mostly concerned with your physical and emotional health, so whenever you are unable to complete something - just email me. If you let me know what's going on, I can help you, for real. I am going to be very understanding about deadlines, IF you reach out and communicate with me. However, if you don't do your work and do not communicate, we will have a problem. I sincerely want to avoid giving a single student an INC this semester, so PLEASE stay in touch! I love you, miss you and wish like crazy that we could just be back in school, but this is the best we can manage right now & we'll get through it together..
Calendar of Due Dates - Plan ahead & remember to email me with any questions about anything :) Focus on the major assignment each week & the Thurs/Friday Socrative quiz. Last day to post assignments is Fri 6/5.
Chapter 15 & 16 "I CANs"...
...define and identify the solute and solvent in a given solution.
...calculate molarities of various solutions and quantitatively determine how they were prepared. M=mol/L
...determine how to prepare dilute solutions from standard solutions using the dilution equation. M1V1 = M2V2
... define and identify Arrhenius and Bornsted-Lowry acids and bases.
...calculate Kw, pH, pOH, [H3O+] & [OH-] of various solutions and use them to describe the relative acidity or basicity of the solution. Kw =[H3O+] x [OH-], pH = -log[H3O+] , pOH = -log[OH-]
... analyze titration data to determine the unknown concentration of an acidic or basic solution. (next week)

This Week's Goals -
The two Labster virtual labs (Solution Preparation and Acids & Bases - Principles) are this week's major graded assignment. Due to the short week and the fact that were studying parts of two chapters over the course of our last two week unit, there will be no socrative quiz at the end of this week. Next week's socrative quiz on 6/4-6/5 will be our last socrative quiz. New assignments will be posted on Monday 6/1.
- MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS - We're using a new platform this week called Labster to do two different virtual labs. Post a link to the Quarter 4 Assignment Tracker When you click on the link, you will need to select "login with Google" and use your CPS email address to access the labs. You'll probably get the hang of how the program works with a few minutes of trial and error, but you need to click on the right things at the right times to complete the lab. There's a "lab pad" that has instructions AND information the lab topics on one of its other tabs. Be sure to check it out. Unfortunately, what our book calls M (molarity), Labster abbreviates with a C for concentration. Like us, it uses n to abbreviate mols, but in their lingo M stands for molar mass. If you run into trouble, use the Ch 15/16 Greatest Hits of Students Questions (link) to ask for help. We can all answer each other's questions there so you don't necessarily have to wait for me to see you email if you're stuck. Chances are someone else has gotten stuck there too, but then figured it out. I will check this help google doc several times a day and respond also.

- Review Ch 16 - Acids/Bases Slides Presentation (link)
- Read 15.1-15.3,15.5,15.6,16.1-16.6 - notes are optional, but please start asking even more questions in Chapter 15/16 - Greatest Hits of Student Questions (link)!
- Review videos & prepare for socrative Chapter 15/16 Solutions & Acid/Base Quiz at the end of next week during regularly scheduled class periods on 6/4 & 6/5. BLUE = Thurs & ORANGE = Fri
- HW Ch 15 #'s 1-8,19,21a,22a,27a,28,31ac & HW Ch 16 #'s 1-9,13,14,20,22a,23a,24,25,26,30ac, 31ac,32ac,33ac,34a,35a,36a,37,40 (post to Quarter 4 Assignment Tracker by Fri 5/29… I know these are boring but they are the VERY BEST way to prepare for our next socrative quiz! Use the virtual parking lot to ask for help too!)
- Consider using the following PhET simulations to help visualize solutions, acids & bases at the molecular level:
- EXTRA CREDIT - Supersaturated cooking! Moving forward, all extra credit will be turned in on our google classroom (code to join = eykv7lo)
Socrative Quiz Info...no socrative quiz this week! Last one will be next week on 6/4 & 6/5 during regularly scheduled orange-blue class periods. The make-up time for last week's ch 10/14 socrative quiz is on 5/16 & 5/27 during regularly scheduled orange-blue class periods.
Log into socrative.com and join the room for your class period. I've separated the class periods out into five rooms: TRINE1, TRINE2, TRINE4, TRINE5 & TRINE 7. If you did not take the chapter 7/8 exam &/or the chapter 9 exam &/or the chapter 13 Gas Quiz A, please consider doing so. You can always take them. They are waiting in their own socrative rooms called "CH78TRINE" & "CH9TRINE" & "CH13ATRINE". IF YOU MISSED CH 10 QUIZ, THE RETAKE IS ON MONDAY 5/18 at 1:00 pm.
- try your hardest
- use your study materials like you will when you take an optional final exam (keep them organized!)
- learn from it
- realize it's not as good or thorough as our normal tests
- EMAIL MRS. TRINE ASAP IF YOU CAN'T TAKE THE SOCRATIVE QUIZZES ON TIME!
